Esteban Gutierrez began his career in 2004 during the Mexican Rotax Max Challenge wherein he raced in the three events on the said season.

In 2006, he competed at the Camkart Challenge Mexico and won all 5 races. He took the fourth place in the Mexican Grand Nationals in Zacatecas, Mexico.

In 2007, Gutierrez joined the Formula BMW USA series, as he finished second overall. During that time, he was recognized as Rookie of the Year.  He also joined the Formula BMW World Final wherein he finished 25th place. A year later, he transferred in Europe wherein he competed and won in the Formula BMW Europe championship series.

Gutierrez moved up during the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2009. Then, in 2010, he joined GP3 season for ART Grand Prix and eventually won.  He signed for ART Grand Prix (renamed as Lotus ART) in 2010 and was paired with Jules Bianchi for both GP2 series, and GP2 Asia series.

During the 2012, Gutierrez stayed for Lotus ART in which it being renamed as Lotus GP. He remained with Sauber and promoted to the race team along with Nico Hulkenberg.
