American musician Janis Joplin is also a painter, dancer and music arranger who had an estimated net worth of $5 million. She was born Janis Lyn Joplin on January 19, 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas, USA, and grew up being called a freak by her classmates until her adolescence. While in high school, she began singing, which continued on to her college years at the University of Texas at Austin.

Joplin dropped out of school and moved to San Francisco, California in the 1960s. She began recording blues standards and became the lead singer of the psychedelic-acid rock band Big Brothers and the Holding Company. She then went solo with her own backing groups, The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band. In 1967, she gained recognition during the Monterey Pop Festival.

Janis Joplin, however, had a drug problem due to heavy use, returned home to recover. She never stopped using drugs despite finishing her rehabilitation. She died on October 4, 1970 due to a heroin overdose in Hollywood’s Landmark Motor Hotel, now the Highland Gardens Hotel. In 1971, her second and final album Pearl was released and went four-times Platinum.

In 2004, Joplin was ranked #46 in the list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time by the Rolling Stone. In 1995, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
