Popular as Plies, Algernod Lanier Washingto was born on July 1, 1976 in Fort Myers, Florida, USA. After attending Fort Myers Senior High School, he attended Miami University. Prior to his music career, Plies played wide receiver for the Miami University football team. Eventually, he dropped out of the university.

After a while, he founded and launched Big Gates with his stepbrother. From 2007 through 2008, he was signed by Slip-n-Slide Records which led to the release of his three albums entitled The Real Testament, Da REAList, and Definition of Real. His first album spawned two successful singles entitled “Hypnotized” and “Shawty”.

In 2007, his collaboration with T-Pain led to the release of the single “Shawty,” which won Plies an Ozone Award for the Best Rap/R&B Collaboration category.
