Robert E. Rich Jr. is a graduate of Williams College in 1963 where he earned a Bachelor of Arts/Science. Between 1963 and 1969, he served in the United States National Guard. He was also a member of the Army Reserved Officer Staff.

Mr. Rich joined Rich Products, a company founded by his father which began with soy-based whip cream, in 1964. He was named President of the startup subsidiary, Rich Products of Canada. In 1969, he earned a Master of Business Administration (with honors) from the University of Rochester after he took some time off from work. Upon his return to the company, he created the position of Vice President of Sales and Marketing. He was named President of the Rich Products in 1978. When his father died in 2006 in Palm Beach, he inherited 56% of the company and he assumed the role as the Chairman.

Robert Rich is also a sportsman, author, Broadway producer, and sports team owner. In 1983, he purchased the Buffalo Bisons minor league baseball team, an AAA affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. He also owns the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, an AA affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, as well as the Jamestown Jammers, the short-season class A affiliate of the Florida Marlins. He is on the Trustees Council of the University of Rochester.

Rich has written his memoir Fish Fights which is in the making for a Hollywood movie. It documents his quest to qualify for the Metropolitan South Florida Fishing Tournament Hall of Fame. He is the Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the International Game Fish Association. He is also a member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America and a member of the board of trustees of the Cleveland Clinic since 2002 while he was appointed Chairman in 2011. He produced the musical Chaplin which debuted on Broadway in 2012.
