Today, Hyundai Motor Group is considered as South Korea's second largest chaebol with 42 subsidiaries. He took over the Hyundai Motor business in 1999 when the conglomerate split into several parts. Prior to becoming the CEO and Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, Chung Mong-Koo served as the CEO of Hyundai Precision & Industry (1977), CEO of Hyundai Pipe (1981) and CEO of Incheon Iron & Steel (1986). From 1987 through 1996, he sat as the CEO of Hyundai Motor Service and from 1996 through 1998, he served as the Chairman of Hyundai Group. Since 2000, he has been serving as the Chairman and CEO of Kia Motors Corp. and Hyundai Motor Co.

Chung Mong-Koo was born on March 19, 1938, in Gangwon Province, South Korea. He is a graduate of Hanyang University. He is currently married with four children. He is the son of Chung Ju-yung who founded Hyundai Conglomerate.
