Greek businessman and shipping tycoon Spiros Latsis has an estimated net worth of $2.2 billion as of May 2017, according to Forbes. According to Forbes, he is the richest person in Greece and 412th in the world.

Dr. Spiro J. Latsis was born in Athens in 1946, and earned his estimated net worth of $2.1 billion through investments in real estate, as the owner of Paneuropean Oil and Industrial Holdings S.A., and with a stake of more than 40% in EFG Eurobank Ergasias. He has recently rebounded after taking a huge hit due to the economic woes in Greece.

In 2012, Mr. Latsis’ stocks at EFG International, Lamda Development and Hellenic Petroleum were all up. He transferred an estimated $300 million in stock in Eurobank, where he is the largest shareholder. His recipients included nine younger members of the Latsis family, as well as the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation.

Spiros Latsis is a graduate of the London School of Economics, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1968, his master’s degree in Logic and Scientific Method in 1970, and a doctorate in Philosophy in 1974. He is a member of the board of Institute of Advanced Studies in Princeton.
