American investment manager James Coulter has an estimated net worth of $2.1 billion as of April 2016 according to Forbes. He is known to be one of the founders of TPG Capital, which is a private equity firm previously known as the Texas Pacific Group.

After graduating from Dartmouth College as summa cum laude, James Coulter attended  Stanford Graduate School of Business to complete his Masters in Business Administration. It was in 1992, when Coulter, together with David Bonderman, founded the San Francisco and Fort Worth-based privately held equity firm, Texas Pacific Group. Today, TPG Capital is considered as one of the world's largest private equity firm managing around $50 million worth of assets.

Through the long years of being in the business, James Coulter has been involved in several investments which include Ducati Motor Holding, America West Airlines, J. Crew, Del Monte Foods, Burger King, Petco, Seagate Technology, Oxford Health Plans, MEMC, Gemplus International and ON Semiconductor.
