He is Tigris Group's current principal and founder. He also serves as the CEO of The Electrum Group LLC. Currently based in New York City, The Electrum Group LLC is an asset management, advisory and investment firm that primarily focuses on the natural resources sector.

After working as an advisor to hedge funds, Thomas Kaplan founded Apex Silver Mines where he later served as the Chairman and CEO. He was also one of the pioneering teams which discovered the San Cristobal deposit in Bolivia. Today, this mineral deposit is considered as one of the world's largest producers of zinc and silver.

It was in 2003 when he co-founded the Leor Exploration & Production LLC. Eventually, this firm became the  fastest-growing private hydrocarbon exploration and production company in the world. After four years, he sold the company for $2.55 billion to EnCana Oil & Gas (U.S.A) Inc.

Born in 1950, Thomas Kaplan is a graduate of the Oxford University where he obtained his BS, Masters and PhD in history. He is currently married to Dafna Recanati Kaplan with whom he has three children.
