Don Tyson was born on April 21, 1930 in Olathe, Arkansas, United States. He attended the University of Arkansas but never finished a degree there. At age 14, he started working for Tyson’s Feed and Hatchery as a truck driver and chicken catcher. Founded by Don Tyson's father, Tyson’s Feed and Hatchery is a family business that deals with live production and poultry feed production. It was in 1958 when its first first poultry processing plant was opened and Don immediately became the first plant manager.

In 1966, he became Tyson’s Foods, Inc's president. From 1967 to 1991, he served as the company's Chairman and CEO. From 1991 to 1995, he served as the Chairman and from 1995 until his retirement in 2001, he was the company's senior chairman. Under his leadership and management, the company's revenue significantly rose from $51 million to over $10 billion and it grew into one of the world's largest manufacturing companies. From 1999 to 2006, his son John served as the CEO of the company but currently, he sits as the Chairman.
