While serving as the chief executive of the bank, Ken Lewis purchased Merill Lynch and  Countrywide Financial incurring massive losses to the bank which necessitated the help of the federal government. Towards the end of 2009, Ken Lewis' retirement from the bank came into rumor. Brian Moynihan succeeded him as the CEO and President while Walter Massey took over his position as Chairman of the Board.
