Christel DeHaan started her career when she established an ironing and typing business. When she met her second husband, Jon, she worked as an administrative assistant at RCA in 1973. A year later, they co-founded the time sharing company, Resort Condominiums International.

When she divorced her husband in 1987, DeHaan was awarded half of the company by the court. She sold RCI for $825 million in 1996. Eventually, she devoted her time doing philanthropy and gave $220 million through her Christel Houses, which supplies goods and services for children in India, Mexico, South Africa, and South America.
