Barbara Bradley Baekgaard started her venture in 1982 while catching a flight with her neighbor, Patricia Miller in Atlanta, Georgia. They noticed that there's no feminine looking luggage around.

They started the company with five hundred dollars and named it as Vera Bradley. Baekgaard and Miller received the 1987 Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the state of Indiana from Arthur Young/VENTURE Magazine.

Aside from the handbags and luggages company, Baekgaard also focused on their foundation, The Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer. As of June 2016, the said charitable institution doled out $27 million for breast cancer research.

Barbara Bradley Baekgaard has four children from her previous marriage. She currently serves as a board member of the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center Development Board and the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer.
