SHS, one of Northern Ireland’s top companies, turned in a £19m profit on nearly £416m sales in 2009-10. The group’s core businesses are sales and marketing, brand ownership and manufacturing. It recently bought the market-research company ESA, enabling SHS Group to expand into corporate services. The business was the brainchild of the late Geoff Salters and Joe Sloan (qv), who started in 1972 with two second-hand vans and had Colgate-Palmolive as their first customer. SHS makes and markets the WKD alcopop drink throughout the UK. It also distributes Cobra beer, Tropicana juice, and Douwe Egberts coffee within its portfolio of brands. The company is worth at least £180m. Salters died in January 2010 but his widow, Brenda, is on the board and the family has a 50% stake and other wealth. Brenda Salters currently has an estimated net worth of $140 million.
