Also known as The Hammer, Frederick Robert Williamson was born on March 5, 1938 in Gary, Indiana, United States. He attended Northwestern University where he played collegiate football. Eventually, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent. In 1960, he played for the Steelers for a year. Later on, he started playing for the American Football League. He spent the next four seasons with the Oakland Raiders where he became a part of the AFL All-Star team in 1963, 1962 and 1961. He then spent another four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

After his retirement from football, Williamson started his acting career. Since 1970, he has appeared on numerous film and TV shows which include Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon, M*A*S*H, The Legend of Nigger Charley, The Legend of Nigger Charley, Black Caesar, Three the Hard Way, One Down, Two to Go, Take A Hard Ride, and Original Gangstas.
