Stephen Weaver Collins was born on October 1, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. He is a cum laude graduate of Amherst College. His first marriage, which lasted for eight years, was to Marjorie Weinman. In April 1985, he married Faye Grant, with whom he has a daughter named Kate. Their divorce was granted in January 2015.

Prior to his TV and film career, Collins was a part of a number of Broadway productions, including The Ritz,  Moonchildren, Spamalot, No Sex Please We're British, and The Loves of Anatol. Off-Broadway, Collins has appeared in Beyond Therapy, Putting It Together, and Macbeth. 

On the big screen, he starred in Because I Said So and The First Wives Club, alongside Diane Keaton. With Meredith Baxter, Collins co-starred in three films, titled A Woman Scorned: The Betty Broderick StoryHer Final Fury: Betty Broderick, the Last Chapter, and All The President's Men.

Currently, Collins is seen on Revolution, a TV series where he plays the role of Dr. Gene Porter.
