Forster was born on July 13, 1941 in Rochester, New York, USA, and graduated from the University of Rochester in 1941 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While in school, he starred in Bye Bye Birdie, which led to his pursuing an acting career.

Forster played supporting roles in two major Hollywood films, Reflections in a Golden Eye and The Stalking Moon. He then had a starring role in the 1969 film Medium Cool, as well in cult movies like Alligator, Vigilante, The Delta Force and The Banker. He then had supporting roles in a number of horror and action films, such as The Black Hole.

Robert Forster had a critically acclaimed performance in the 1997 film Jackie Brown, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
