Mary Ann Murphy was born on March 9, 1958  in Lancaster, Ohio, USA. After graduating from Northwest High School, she attended Ohio University, where she graduated with a degree in physical education, minoring in modern dance. Eventually, she moved to Washington D.C. to pursue a career. In Washington D.C., she became a dance instructor, and while working working as an instructor, she met Manfred Sigletz, who later became her partner in several dance championships. They became Austrian National Champions in 1990 and 1991.

In addition to running her own dance studio, "Mary Murphy," she also organizes the Hollywood Dancesport Championships, which are held in Los Angeles. She is often invited to judge many dance competitions, including the U.S. National Ballroom Championships. From 2005 through 2009, and since 2011, she has been a part of So You Think You Can Dance competition.
